G-Drive Q Part # 913003-01

Postby Gretsch6122 » Oct 7th, '13, 11:39

Hello,

I love my Quad and the controller works great. I need to replace my dead Hitachi Drive.

What is the max capacity this controller can handle? Can I choose any drive manufacturer and what cache does it have to be?

Thank you

Hi Gretsch6122,

Thanks for posting. The G-Drive Q controller supports up to a 2TB drive. Most Q were a sata 1 interface, sata 2 drives are backwards compatible so should work fine. The G-Drive Q has only been tested with Hitachi drives, theoretically other brands should work but as it has not been tested I cannot guarantee compatibility. As for cache size 8 or 16 MB cache should be fine, 32MB may have some issue.

Hello I asked the same question via your email support and this was the answer I got!

Dear Client,

Thank you for contacting the HGST Technical Support Center.

The largest capacity that we have tested with the G-DRIVE Q would be 1.5TB. I do not believe the cache should make a difference but to be safe I would say 32MB cache with the older SATA II drive.

I also Called your Support Line at 1-888-426-5214 and the first answer I received was that it would only support 500GB. I insisted that the customer service agent was wrong and to verify his reply. He then came back and said it supports up to 1.5 TB's. This is the model of the original defective drive HDT725050VLA360 and here are the specs:

Key Features

External Data Transfer Rate 133 Mbps
Internal Data Transfer Rate 817 Mbit/s
Form Factor 3.5"

Sound Emission 30 dB

Width 4 in.
Depth 5.75 in.

Will the person with the accurate answer please stand up!

Hi Gretsch6122,

I have confirmed with my senior tech that the board for the unit will support up to a 2TB drive. However if you have a unit that is using a IDE interface the largest drive you are likely to find is 1TB. In which case whatever size drive you find for it should work. Larger drives such as 1.5TB and 2TB drives have only been produced with a sata interface.
