Mac os 10.6.8 / 10.7 hard drive?

Postby plenty11 » Jun 27th, '14, 07:51

I want use G-Technology G-Drive 3 TB Thunderbolt External Hard Drive to my new mac. My mac i use now have 10.6.8 and I need to move all my picture to the new hard drive.
G-Technology G-Drive 3 TB Thunderbolt External Hard Drive requires 10.7.
My question is: Can I use the new hard drive with with my mac using 10.6.7 if I only use USB2 contact?

Hi plenty11,

Thanks for posting. While usb 3 is backwards compatible with usb 2 the 10.7 is needed for the driver for the newer controller chip the drive uses. All the drivers are provided by the operating system and the drivers for this unit were not included until 10.7.

Thanks for your answer.
Can I move my picture from the old mac and later use the hard drive with my new mac? Does the hard drive works with newer controller with the new mac? or must I update my old mac?

Hi plenty11,

The important part is the os version. The newer macs will have no problem reading it. Meeting the minimum os version so the driver is present is the important factor. the older computer would need at least 10.7 to use the g-drive with thunderbolt.
