Using your G-Technology drive on Windows and Mac tip

Postby Kenny M » Sep 20th, '12, 15:18

G-Technology products are formated for Mac out of the box but with a reformat they can be configured for cross platform use. Currently there are two formats that will allow read and write access for both OS:

FAT32 (MS-DOS): Limited to no single file over 4GB, Works with all versions of Windows and Mac OS.

exFAT: Requires a exFAT update for Windows XP, natively supported by Windows Vista and Windows 7.
Requires Mac OS 10.6.5+.

Please follow the link below for the steps on formating a G-Drive to FAT32:

*If supported these instructions can be used for formating to exFAT.

Lastly there is the option of adding support with third party applications.
Mac formated drive support for Windows: http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/standard/
NTFS formated drive support for Mac: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/

Kenny: If I format the drive for cross-platform use, is it easy to reformat for Mac only? I want to pull files from a PC and put them on my Mac. I won't be using the PC again after that.

It can easily be done the same way as you did the FAT-32, you would just need to change the Partition Map Scheme back to GUID, then choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the Format. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for posting. All G-Technology products are pre-formatted for mac and must be cleaned and formatted to work on windows. I am including links on how to format for windows only or for use on both systems.

NTFS (Windows Only) http://support.g-technology.com/kbase/u ... php?id=140
EXFAT (Mac and PC) http://support.g-technology.com/kbase/u ... php?id=141
