Is it okay to leave my external drive turned on all the time?

There is no negative effect to leaving your hard drive turned on. There is also no benefit to turning off, other than saving electricity. It is a personal preference depending on your needs.

I can't format my Drive via USB connection on my Mac.I keep getting a spinning beach ball.

On Windows I can't initialize my G-Technology hard drive. Disk Management says it is a "GPT Protective Partition."
