On Windows 7/Vista I cannot see my drive in Computer

Note: The following steps below are for users who have “administrative rights” to their PC.

(Screen shots below are from Windows 7, however the process is identical in Windows Vista)

G-Tech drives are formatted at the factory for Mac OS. Changes to the Mac OS in 10.5 and above have caused an incompatibility with Windows OS, requiring the drive to be “cleaned” before being formatted. This process is outlined below. Before starting process remove all other external drives except the drive you want to erase/initialize. This does not include the start up drive.

IMPORTANT NOTE: THIS PROCESS WILL ERASE ALL INFORMATION ON THE DISK SELECTED

  1. Open Disk Management by right clicking on “Computer” and then clicking on “Manage.”
  2. Go to Disk Management and resize the window so you can view ALL the drives in the lower right section of Disk Management.
  3. IMPORTANT! Be sure to locate the correct Disk number of the G-Tech drive you wish to clean and format. This process will erase all the information on the drive. If you have multiple drives in your system and are unsure which is the G-Tech product, please contact technical support to guide you through the process. In the example below we will be working with Disk 1.
  4. Open a Command Prompt window by clicking on the “START” menu
then type “cmd” (without quotes) in the ”Search programs and files” field (Do NOT press enter after typing the letters)

After typing CMD, Windows will display the program like the screen below. Right click the program “cmd.exe” and click “Run as Administrator”

You will be prompted with a warning, click Yes to proceed as shown below:
  5. You should now see the Command Prompt window: In the Command window type”diskpart” and hit enter
  6. Now type “select disk X” (Where “Disk X” is the disk number you identified in step 3) and hit ENTER
BE CERTAIN YOU HAVE SELECTED THE CORRECT DISK!! THE NEXT STEP WILL ERASE ALL DATA ON THIS DISK.
  7. Now type “clean” and hit ENTER (this will start the process)
  8. Once the process has completed, type “exit” and hit ENTER (click “x” to close the window) Screenshot of process below for reference:
  9. Your G-DRIVE is now ready to be partitioned in Disk Manager. For instructions on how to format your G-Technology Drive, please choose from one of the following articles:

Formatting NTFS for Windows
